Blood Screening

Blood Screening

It allows us to evaluate organ function

Even if your pet seems healthy, they could be suffering from underlying health problems that veterinarians can’t detect during a normal physical examination.

Many severe health issues start off being relatively minor and easy to treat. Without prompt detection, though, they often grow into life-threatening illnesses. This is why our veterinarians strongly recommend routine blood screening for dogs, cats, small mammals, sugar gliders, reptiles and amphibians in Des Moines and the surrounding areas.

The Importance of Routine Blood Tests

Routine blood tests allow us to detect disease in its earliest stages and begin treatment immediately.

This usually results in a better outcome for the patient. Routine screenings also allow our vets to establish baseline values to determine what represents “good health” for each patient.

At Saltwater Animal Hospital, we use routine blood screening to check for several things. For example, a complete blood cell count, or CBC, lets us know how many of each type of cell is in your pet’s blood. If your dog or cat has a high white blood cell count, it could indicate that they are suffering from an infection or chronic inflammation. On the other hand, a low red blood cell count indicates anemia.

Blood chemistry profiles allow us to assess organ function, particularly for the liver and kidneys. These profiles also give us information about your pet’s blood sugar and electrolyte levels and allow us to check for endocrine disorders like diabetes. Abnormalities in your pet’s blood test results help us decide which additional tests and treatments are necessary.
