Ultrasound, or ultrasonography, is a diagnostic procedure in which high-frequency sound waves are used to capture detailed images of patients’ internal structures.

How Ultrasound Works

Ultrasonography machines generate ultrasound waves that are used to create images.

The machine is connected to a handheld unit that is held against the patient’s skin. It emits ultrasound waves, which bounce off the patient’s internal structures, including organs, and return to a sensor inside the ultrasonography machine. The machine then uses these “echoes” to create images our veterinarians can view and manipulate on a screen.

Ultrasound technology creates high-quality images and works well for examining fluid-filled organs, such as the liver, kidneys, spleen, and gallbladder. We also use ultrasounds to diagnose and determine the severity of certain types of cancer and to monitor pregnancies and fetal health. Because the images are generated in real-time, this amazing technology can even be used to observe the heart as it beats.
